Belgium coach Robert Waseige is sweating on the fitness of defender Glen De Boeck ahead of Tuesday's opening clash with Japan.

With skipper Marc Wilmots recovered from a knee problem, De Boeck is the only doubt for the Red Devils as they look to get their Group H campaign off to a good start against the co-hosts.

De Boeck's ankle injury was described as "worrying" by Belgian medical staff on Saturday and he will undergo further treatment in the build up to next week's game.

De Boeck has impressed recently at the heart of the Belgian defence and his absence could force Waseige to revert to a 3-5-2 formation from his preferred 4-4-2.

However, the coach has refused to give away any clues about his line-up.

"We are so closely followed over here that everyone expects you to give the team days in advance," he said.

"I don't see why I should, but don't expect drastic changes, stability is the key for Belgium."
