Luis Figo believes the current Portugal team can make a bigger impression at this World Cup than Eusebio and Co did in 1966.

The FIFA player of the year is confident that the current squad is stronger than any ever assembled by his country.

"With every respect for the previous Portuguese teams, this team has carried Portugal's name higher than ever. We are a winning team, there is no doubt," he told Portuguese newspaper Record.

Antonio Oliveira's team have been drawn to face Korea, Poland and the USA in Group D, and they face the Americans first on June 5 in Suwon.

"Our aim is to pass the first phase, then we will go step by step, with the security of knowing that anything can happen," added Figo.

Having struggled with injuries in recent months, Figo is fit again now. But he is considering quitting the game at the top of his powers.

"I will retire sooner than everyone thinks," he said. "I will not miss the limelight and I will not be frightened to retire, the end comes to everyone."

There should be no need to fear an imminent retirement, as Figo is just two years into his contract with European champions Real Madrid and Portugal host the European Championship in two years.
