Italy skipper Paolo Maldini has a chance to break
the record for most appearances in World Cup matches at this tournament and if
he does it could happen in the final.
Maldini has made 19 appearances in the last three tournaments and is looking
to overhaul the mark set by Lothar Matthaus, who played in 25 games between 1982
and 1998.
If Maldini plays in seven games in Japan and South Korea he will be out on his
own and possibly playing in the June 30 final in Yokohama - although he could
also break the record by playing in the third place play-off.
