Lens and Liverpool have opened talks about the transfer of El-Hadji Diouf to Anfield, according to the Senegalese player's agent.
The 21-year-old has reportedly been targeted by Liverpool coach Gerard Houllier who is known to want a striker this summer.
Agent Stephane Canard told L'Equipe that talks are underway.
"Discussions are taking place," he said.
"Everything's going well but nothing has been signed yet."
Canard met with the Lens president Gervais Martel on Tuesday and claims to have had talks with Liverpool representatives.
Nicknamed the 'Serial Killer' by Senegalese fans, and a key member of their World Cup squad, Diouf is valued at over £10million.
Lens coach Joel Muller accepts that Diouf is likely to leave this summer and is already eyeing up a replacement.
A possible target is France Under-21 international Pierre-Alain Frau who was outstanding in the recent European Under-21 Championships in Switzerland.
The Sochaux forward scored 14 league goals last season.
Muller said: "He has to be as good as Diouf, as creative and as good in front of goal.
"But I'm waiting for confirmation on his departure first. There is always a possibility that things may change."
Frau fits the bill as far as Muller in concerned.
He said: "Pierre-Alain is an excellent player who is very quick. He has made great progress. He is explosive and above all he has great spirit."
