Manchester United's Uruguay international Diego Forlan says the South Americans will go all out for victory against Denmark in their opening Group A game at the World Cup.

Uruguay have to play African Nations finalists Senegal on June 6, before ending the group stage against reigning champions France five days later.

With these tough rivals to face, Forlan believes his country needs to defeat Denmark on June 1 to stand a reasonable chance of progressing.

"The first game is the most important and we have to win it however we can, because if we do, the road becomes easier and we will be able to control things better," he told Marca.

Although he is one of the less experienced players in the squad, 23-year-old Forlan is confident he will get his chance in the competition.

"The games are very intense and the teams are going to have to renew themselves in every game so they can continue playing flat out. The better we do in the early games, the more chance we have to play," he said.

Forlan even allowed himself to look ahead to the second phase.

"Things will get difficult for us there because we could have to play England, Argentina or Nigeria, however, we have to play the games first and give opinions afterwards," he said.
