Defender Anthony Seric is confident Croatia will make it past the first phase of the World Cup.

The Croats, who came third at France 98, are paired in Group G with Italy, Ecuador and Mexico.

But Seric, who plays his club football for Verona in Serie A, is undaunted.

"We are convinced we can get past the first round," he told Gazzetta dello Sport.

"If we win the first match then life will be much easier and we will be able to face the second match without so much pressure."

Mirko Jozic's team open up against Mexico on June 3.

"Mexico does not represent a great obstacle but the match against Italy is different," the 23-year-old added.
