Former Peru international Augusto Palacios has backed South Africa's class of 2002 to outshine those of France 98.

Palacios, part of the Bafana Bafana set-up four years ago and now a member of coach Jono Sono's technical team, expects the squad to shine in Group B where they meet Spain, Slovenia and Paraguay.

"I think we can and we will do better this time," said Palacios. "Everything seems to be better than the last time.

"We have had very good preparations and the results in warm-up matches have been positive," he added.

Sono's side tackles the Paraguayans in the opening fixture on Sunday on the back of three successive victories in warm-up matches against Madagascar, Scotland and Turkey.

"There is a very good mixture of youth and experience in this squad," added Palacios.
