AGUIRRE SATISFIED WITH LINE-UP

Mexico used an experimental line-up as they eased to a 2-0 win over Japanese club team Tokyo Verdy on Sunday, despite struggling with the World Cup ball and fading in the later stages of the match.

Braulio Luna and Francisco Palencia struck at either end of the match for the Central Americans, who fielded an unusual 3-2-2-3 formation.

Coach Javier Aguirre's experimentation was unexpected, but he brushed off its importance as the team prepares for the World Cup.

"This was nothing more than a training," he said.

However, he was concerned about some wayward passing, which he ascribed to the properties of the controversial official World Cup ball.

Several players have complained that it is too light and difficult to control.

"We've been training with it for 40 days, and still we can't get used to it.

"I counted about 20 balls missed in the first half, that's too much," Aguirre said.

He was pleased with his team's performance in the early stages, as Palencia directed play effectively from his position just behind the two central strikers, Cuauhtemoc Blanco and Luis Hernandez.

The opening goal came after just eight minutes, when Luna lashed a free-kick just inside the left-hand post of Tokyo goalkeeper Daijiro Takukawa.

Mexico continued to dominate most of the second half, despite Aguirre making nine changes and leaving just Blanco and Palencia from the starting 11.

But their performance faded late in the second half, and Palencia added some unexpected lustre to the result with a neat individual goal with just three minutes remaining.

Mexico play their first World Cup game against Croatia in Niigata on June 3 and are also drawn in Group G with Ecuador and Italy.
