After the quarter-finals of the World Cup finals, Sportinglife.com assesses the performances of the surviving four teams.

  • Previous position in brackets

1 (2) Brazil: Back in their rightful position at the top of the standings following an excellent defeat of England. Scolari's team showed their defensive frailties again when Lucio handed Michael Owen the opening goal in Shizuoka, but after that the samba superstars were just superb. They took the lead with goals from Rivaldo and Ronaldinho, but even more enlightening was what happened after that. When Ronaldinho was sent off with more than half and hour remaining you feared for the favourites, but not a bit of it. They actually controlled the game even more with only 10 men, although they were helped by England's abject lack of attacking flair and passion in the closing stages. One slight worry is the fitness of Ronaldo - he came off early on Friday and Brazil need him to be at his best again to beat the Turks for a second time.

2 (8) Turkey: Excellent side who will meet Brazil for a second time after their extra-time defeat of Senegal in the quarters. Senol Gunes would be looking at possibly lifting the trophy if his team had a regular goalscorer. His side have an excellent goalkeeper, a superb defence and some classy midfielders. But with Hakan Sukur woefully short of confidence you just can't see them scoring more than one. I reckon they'll need a clean sheet to beat Brazil, but they're good enough to do it. Presence in the last four is no fluke.

3 (7) South Korea: My tip for the surprise packages before the tournament began and now I can say "I told you so". They were superb pre-tournament against England and France, making everybody take notice. Since then they've disposed of Portugal, Italy and Spain. Even if they have had a little luck there is no fluke about their presence at this late stage. They've been THE story of the finals, and their games have been the best spectacle. Well-organised, superbly fit and with good technical ability. A credit to the coach of the tournament Guus Hiddink. The one worry - like the Turks - is that they don't score enough goals.

4 (5) Germany: Now bringing up the rear after another unexciting display against the Americans. Slightly fortunate to get through that quarter-final clash, and have yet to really convince that they can challenge for the biggest prize of all. They've ground out results in typical German fashion, but they're still not a patch on German sides of old. If the Koreans are not shattered by their back-to-back extra-time wins, then expect another shock result this week.
