After the second round of the World Cup finals, Sportinglife.com assesses the performances of the surviving eight teams.

  • Previous position in brackets

(8): England - Blame it on patriotism, blame it on the growing hype around the country. But most importantly, blame it on the best defence in the finals, blame it on two strikers who are hitting form at the right time and blame it on the growing weaknesses of the remaining contenders. Brazil stand in their way and beating the samba kings is a tough ask. But if the conditions are not too stifling - as some reports are beginning to suggest - then this will be as good a chance as any for Eriksson's men to make the final four.

(1): Brazil - Knocked off the top spot for the first time in the finals, despite both Rivaldo and Ronaldo continuing their golden boot bids. However, they look sloppy at the back and need a vastly-improved performance against England to advance.

(6): Senegal - Showed that they had great heart in the comeback victory over Sweden where glory finally came in golden goal extra time. Their odd defensive lapse remains a worry, but look a fair shot for the semis.

(2): Spain - This could well be their year, given by the tepid performance they turned in against the Republic of Ireland, only to edge through on penalties. Before that, Camacho's team looked good, but a tough quarter-final with South Korea awaits.

(7): Germany - Edged through to the quarter-finals without playing anywhere near their best. Have looked shaky since their opening victory, but are always a danger in the knockout phase.

(16): USA - Few people could have envisaged the States getting this far, but they nullified Mexico completely in the second round. Have talent going forward at their disposal, with one of the best goalkeepers at the finals, in Friedel.

(12): South Korea - Stunning comeback to dispose of Italy showed that they are a team that can never be ruled out. Despite failing to make much of an impression for much of the game, they are always a danger with their vast crowds supporting them.

(13): Turkey - Fortunate to face a disappointing Japan side in round two, but deserve great credit for reaching the quarter-finals for the first time. Need more from striker Sukur if they want to really challenge now.
