OUR GUIDE TO JEONJU

Located in the south west of the country, Jeonju is renowned in Korea as a town of culture and cuisine.

A three-hour bus or train journey from Seoul, it is rich in historical sites, providing plenty for tourists to do.

And with its artistic heritage, cultural activities are a regular fixture on the local calendar.

Designers at the Jeonju stadium have cleverly made the ground in the shape of a folding fan, one of the speciality products from the area.

Accommodation:

Varying budgets are catered for in Jeonju with two 'deluxe' hotels, one 'second-class' hotel and two youth hostels recommended.

Other popular modes of accomodation are in university dormitories and at camp sites, with more of the latter being built in the run-up to this summer's finals.

Places of Interest:

Mount Maisan Provincial Park: Eighteen miles east of Jeonju, it provides stunning backdrops and temples.

National Jeonju Museum: Contains art work, historic materials and cultural produce of the area.

Provincial Folk Music Institute: Experience traditional folk music both of a provincial and national nature.

Deokijn Park: The representative park of Jeonju, this relaxing location is marked by an impressive suspension bridge over a prominent pond.

Jungang-dong: If it is food, entertainment and atmosphere you are after, this buzzing street should satisfy.

Local Delicacies:

Inflential in the Honam region owing to a history of markets in the town, Jeonju became a focal point of new tastes provided by visiting traders.

The town is famed for its bibimbap, rice mixed with minced meat and vegetables in a large bowl.

Kongnamul Gukbap is another favoured local dish, comprising of cooked rice mixed with bean sprout soup.

Where To Eat:

Traditional bibimbap restaurants include Gogung and Sungmidang, whilst the town still caters for a wide range of tastes.

Korean, Japanese, Chinese and Western foods are all widely available, many of which located on Jungang-dong.

To the World Cup stadium:

The stadium is situated in the downtown area of Jeonju, providing good access for fans.

Only 500m from the Jeonju Interchange, it is rougly a ten-minute bus ride from the main bus terminal and central hotels.
