The Japan captain, 29, will fill the void left by the sale of Timmy Simons to Club Brugge this summer.

"After the unexpected transfer of Timmy, we had thought at length about how we could compensate for his loss," said Nurnberg's director of sport Martin Bader on the club's official website.

"Makoto Hasebe was soon identified as a suitable solution. The reason it took so long is because he has gained such a strong reputation in Wolfsburg in six years there.

"Makoto brings with him the experience of 134 Bundesliga appearances, he already has a command of the German language and he will strengthen our squad immediately with his quality."

Hasebe moved to the Bundesliga in 2008, winning the title at the end of his first season with Wolfsburg and emerging as an important member of Felix Magath's squad, with qualities Nurnberg coach Michael Wiesinger is now looking forward to witnessing first hand.

"Makoto brings leadership qualities with him and he has convinced us in terms of his character," Wiesinger said.

"He already knows the Bundesliga well and will help us immediately."

Nurnberg slipped into the bottom two of the Bundesliga after a 1-0 defeat to Augsburg on Saturday.
