The 28-year-old spent two years at St Mary's, joining from Sanfrecce Hiroshima, but after helping the team to promotion in 2012 could not establish himself as a Barclays Premier League player.
He did not make a league appearance in the top flight under Nigel Adkins or current boss Mauricio Pochettino, and had a spell on loan at FC Tokyo at the end of last season.
Southampton said on their website: "Southampton Football Club thanks Lee for his services and wishes the forward well in his future career."
