Jack Ross today revealed St Mirren will be playing for Tom Brighton in Tuesday night's Co-operative Insurance Cup quarter-final against Motherwell following the luckless midfielder's latest horror injury.

Brighton faces another lengthy spell on the sidelines after a scan confirmed he had suffered a complete disruption of the anterior cruciate and medial ligaments during Saturday's 3-3 Clydesdale Bank Premier League draw against the same opponents.

The 25-year-old will now visit a specialist and is set to undergo surgery that could keep him out for the rest of the season.

Saturday saw Brighton make his first SPL start since the opening day of last term, another serious knee injury and an ankle problem having dogged his entire career since he joined the Buddies in May 2008.

In fact, his troubles date back to his time at Millwall, where a serious ankle injury in March 2007 ultimately ended his New Den stay.

This latest blow today prompted team-mate Ross to declare Saints were determined to beat Motherwell tomorrow as a tribute to Brighton.

"It's very difficult for me to appreciate how he's feeling," the full-back said.

"You have to get on with the game tomorrow night and get on with the rest of the season.

"But certainly as a squad of players, we really, really feel for him.

"It'll be a massive part of us trying to win the game tomorrow; it'll be as much for him as for anybody else."

Brighton was eased back into the squad at the start of the season, impressing as a substitute and scoring his first goal for the club in last weekend's 3-1 win at Falkirk.

Ross added: "He's worked tremendously hard to get himself back fit and back involved in the team.

"In recent weeks, he's done really well for us.

"You don't like to see a player suffer a serious injury at any point, especially the way things have been for him recently.

"He has a great deal of sympathy from his team-mates because they're the guys who spend every day with him and work with him.

"Hopefully, we can go and do him proud tomorrow night and for the rest of the season."

To do that, Saints must avoid a repeat of the late collapse that saw them surrender a 3-1 lead on Saturday.

Ross believes Gus MacPherson's men can provide the same level of entertainment tomorrow, but with a different outcome.

"If you score three goals at home, you expect to see out the game, especially considering we were 3-1 ahead as well," the 33-year-old said.

"I think St Mirren fans would like to see a similar performance but, for us, it's all about getting a victory on the night. I'm sure Motherwell would say the same."

Ross, who was part of the side which reached the Scottish Cup semi-final last season as well as the Falkirk team who got to the last four of the League Cup in 2007, added: "There's a huge incentive for both teams to get to a semi-final.

"To get to the last four and have that to look forward to gives your season a boost as well."
