Kenny Miller has urged club bosses to ensure Walter Smith remains at Rangers beyond January, insisting they are fortunate to have him as their manager.

Uncertainty continues to surround the future of Smith and his assistant Ally McCoist, who are both yet to sign new contracts amid turmoil behind the scenes at the Scottish champions.

The Rangers boss spoke out after last week's draw against Hibernian claiming the club was now being run by the bank - something which was later denied by Lloyds Banking Group.

What is clear is that finances have been a problem for the Glasgow giants for some time but, as far as Miller is concerned, a new deal for Smith should be a priority.

"He has been there and seen and done it," said the striker.

"He is one of the top managers about at the moment and there is no doubt about that. The football club are very lucky to have him.

"I know the players feel like that and I'm sure the club feels the same as well. At the end of January, we would like to see Walter and his coaching staff still here."

McCoist has expressed a desire to step into the hotseat at the turn of the year if Smith does leave.

Asked whether the number two would be ready for the top job, Miller replied: "That's not for me to answer to be honest.

"If Ally feels he is ready, then that's up to him. And, if other people think he's ready, it's up to them to appoint him.

"We want the management team here. It's a fantastic place to work and we have a great manager and coaches at the club and we wouldn't want anything to change to be honest with you.

"I don't think Ally would be in the position he is in if he didn't have the qualities to eventually take over as a manager in his own right one day.

"He definitely has got qualities and credit to the gaffer, Ally and all the backroom staff, they have created a good place for us to work.

"It's thoroughly enjoyable and we wouldn't want anything to change at the moment."

The situation regarding the sale of players in January is also unclear.

Smith made reference to his entire squad being up for sale last week but a statement on the club's official website hours later claimed they would not be forced to sell assets during the next transfer window.

"We are in the same boat as we were last year and nothing happened," said Miller.

"We will wait and see. We are just concentrating on things on the field. If we can put things right on the field, hopefully things off the field will take care of itself.

"If you are asking me personally, then I'm not thinking about it at all.

"I'm firmly focused on regaining the league this year and winning as many competitions as we can and hopefully progressing in the Champions League.

"I'm sure the other players will be of the same mindset that they are firmly focused on the job at hand at the moment.

"If anything happens in January and players have to move on, then that's something we will deal with if it comes to it."

Speaking as Rangers launched their online TV station, Miller added: "To be honest, it doesn't affect us. It might affect us come January if any of us were to be sold.

"But we just concentrate on training hard. Our performances on the pitch haven't been great so we need to put that right and anything behind the scenes and off the pitch we will leave to other people.

"We are not sitting in the dressing room talking about it. We've got other things on our mind and more important things to worry about than what's going on off the field.

"We need to improve our performances and start winning games and that's what we're focused on."
