Allan Maitland's reign at lowly Alloa got off to a winning start with an
unlikely Tennent's Scottish Cup comeback win over Bank of Scotland Premier
League Livingston.
The Second Division basement boys - without a league victory since August -
stunned Paul Lambert's team with two goals in the last 20 minutes a fourth round
match at either Queen of the South or Hamilton.
Paul Dalglish's first-half penalty had Livi in the driving seat - but the
Wasps stung for one of the club's greatest triumphs.
Goals from Ross Hamilton and Robert Sloan cued celebratory scenes from the
away support as Maitland - who took over from caretaker boss Gareth Evans on
Sunday after Tom Hendrie's sacking - leapt for joy.
Things started quietly before a crowd of just 1,518 - Livi's lowest crowd of
the season.
Belgian Harald Pinxten blazed a shot wide for Livi early on before the
defender was booked for a foul on Sloan after 10 minutes.
Alloa, beginning to show some confidence, then engineered a great chance for
former Hearts player Sloan, who curled a 15-yard left-footed drive just wide.
But the Wasps almost handed Livi a gift when goalkeeper James Evans misjudged
the bounce of Paul Tierney's long ball.
Dalglish, tight on the byline, could not take advantage of the gaping empty
net as he sliced the ball across goal.
But it was Dalglish who enabled Livi to break the resistance of one of the
worst defences in Scotland in the 38th minute.
Fraser Forrest rashly brought down the former Newcastle player when he was
turning away from goal and referee Charlie Richmond had no hesitation in
pointing to the spot.
The son of Scotland legend Kenny made no mistake to tuck the ball past Evans
for his sixth goal of the season after 38 minutes.
Three minutes before the break a flowing Livi move put Dalglish clear down the
right but his angled effort flew across goal.
Livi started brightly at the start of the second half and Maitland must have
feared his part-time team would begin to show signs of fatigue.
In the 49th minute, Greg Strong's long ball was not dealt with by the Wasps
backline and Tierney raced clean through - but the Irishman's first touch was
poor and Evans blocked with his legs.
However, Alloa continued to battle and David McGeown saw a header drift over
from Sloan's cross in the 54th minute.
Forrest then failed to redeem himself for his first-half error after failing
to convert a back-post header from a well-struck inswinging corner.
In the 65th minute, Snodgrass curled a left-footed 25-yard free-kick just over
- but drama soon followed when Wasps scored an equaliser with Maitland poised to
make changes.
Stevenson's corner was glanced home at the near post by Hamilton with 20
minutes remaining to lift Alloa spirits.
And nine minutes from time Stevenson was the architect again as his cross into
the box was blasted home from six yards by Sloan's left foot, with Roddy
McKenzie wrong footed.
The hosts piled forward in the closing minutes but Alloa held on for a
stunning success to the delight of their travelling band of fans.
