Two late goals meant Livingston and Kilmarnock shared a point apiece in their
dramatic Bank of Scotland Premier league clash at Almondvale.
The visitors had the best of the match by far, creating several chances in
either half but just could not get the breakthrough against a jaded-looking Livi
side who were on the ropes for long periods.
And when Livi striker David Fernandez scored against the run of play in the
84th minute it looked a classic smash-and-grab act.
But an equaliser two minutes later by Killie substitute Craig Dargo, on at
half-time for Danny Invincibile, gave the visitors a well deserved point.
Killie had the ball in the net in the final seconds through Colin Nish but the
little striker was ruled offside and the Livingston escape story was complete.
Livi actually created the first chance of the game in the first minute when
Jon Paul McGovern found Colin McMenamin with a pass which split the visitors'
defence but the striker's shot from 16 yards was well blocked by Killie defender
Freddy Dindeleux's last gasp tackle.
Killie's first effort on goal did not come until the 15th minute but
midfielder Eric Skora's speculative shot from 25 yards was easily saved by Livi
'keeper Roddy McKenzie.
It was certainly no classic but Kilmarnock were probably having the better of
things and defender Gary Hay's shot from just outside the box in the 20th minute
was heading for the corner of the net until McKenzie tipped it round the post
for a corner which Livi, to their credit, defended comfortably.
Five minutes later Skora sent a close range header from an Invincibile cross
just wide of McKenzie's right hand post and then, on the half hour mark, the
impressive Frenchman cut in from the right and drove a right-footed shot from 25
yards which skimmed the Livi crossbar.
McMenamin forced a good point blank save from Kilmarnock's almost redundant
'keeper Colin Meldrum after a spell of pressure towards the end of the first
half but it was still the Ayrshire men who dominated.
There was no real surprise when lacklustre Livingston made a change at the
interval, striker Fernando Pasquinelli coming on for McMenamin, but there were
some raised eyebrows when it emerged that Killie's on-form hitman Invincibile
had made way for Dargo.
The best chance of the game so far fell to Kris Boyd in the 50th minute when
he was on the end of an in-swinging Stephen Murray cross from the right but the
big striker headed wide from 10 yards when it looked easier to score.
The visitors again took control and as the second half continued Livingston
were being pinned back into their own half with little in the way of
counter-attacks to offer some respite.
On the hour mark there were penalty appeals from the visitors when Murray
slammed the ball off Livi defender Jamie McAllister's hand in the penalty area
but referee Mike Ritchie waved play on.
Two minutes later Livi boss Davie Hay introduced midfielder Lee Makel for the
tiring Burton O'Brien to provide a spark for the Lions.
But still the Rugby Park men looked more likely, exemplified moments later
when McKenzie had to be smart off his line to block a Jamie Fowler header from
point blank range.
Kilmarnock were still on top but incredibly they went behind in the 84th
minute when David Fernandez got on the end of a Pasquinelli flick on and lobbed
the ball over Meldrum from 12 yards out.
But the home side's cheers had barely subsided when the game was level again.
Two minutes a goalmouth scramble saw Killie substitute Dargo scramble the ball
over the line from close range.
Killie had the ball in the net in the dying seconds through Nish but the goal
was ruled out for offside.
