Hibs snatched a point in the third minute of injury time after a remarkable
finish with even keeper Brian Gunn coming out of his goal to play as a forward.
The goal came from a Kevin Harper corner as Brian Welsh collected and blasted
a shot at close range. The ball seemed to enter the net but was booted out and
despite appeals by the Dunfermline defence referee John Fleming declared the
ball had crossed the line.
Earlier it looked as if Hibs had sunk even deeper into the relegation gloom
when they were dealt the cruelest of blows - an own goal
It happened in the 48th minute when Greg Shields lobbed a ball to Jerry
Britton.
Grant Brebner was able to intercept but in chesting the ball down it struck
his legs and rebounded into his own net.
The biggest crowd of the season of 12,749 were treated to some exciting
end-to-end stuff at the start of the game but most of the attacks fizzled out
because of poor finishing.
However, as the game went on both keepers were severely tested
Dunfermline's Marc Millar in particular had keeper Gunn in terrible trouble on
two occasions and only fine work by Gunn prevented Dunfermline getting ahead.
At the other end Barry Laveti and Tony Rougier in turn had keeper Ian
Westwater in all kinds of trouble but once again could not get the ball in the
net.
After the Hibs own goal, tempers flared and there were no fewer than six
bookings.
Rougier had the best chance of the half when he broke through on his own in
the 68th minute and Westwater had to be lightning fast to pull his shot down on
the far post.
After 90 minutes in a last desperate bid Gunn left his goal to help the Hibs
forwards
As a result of the pressure the corner was forced and Hibs equalised though
Dunfermline's manager Bert Paton will be very annoyed that Brian Welsh was given
enough room in front of goal to score.
