First Division promotion contenders Raith showed they are capable of matching
the big boys by springing a surprise to reach the fourth round of the Tennents
Scottish Cup.
Jimmy Nicholl's side were much the better footballing team against a Hibs team
who relied on the long-ball game.
Raith played a more calculated passing game with many nice touches and after
exerting good early pressure, took the lead after 10 minutes through
man-of-the-match John Miller. He fired home from 10 yards after excellent play
by full-back Craig McEwan.
Raith continued to press, and in the 21st minute scored a memorable second
goal. From a Danny Lennon corner, former Hibs striker Keith Wright sent in a
dangerous cross from the left and Miller fired a 10-yard volley into the roof of
the net past helpless Chris Reid.
But within 60 seconds, Hibs had provided themselves with a lifeline when
midfield ace Pat McGinlay slammed a shot home from the edge of the box after
good build-up play by Kevin Harper.
Hibs came back into the match but Raith held out until half-time and the home
side grew more desperate throughout the second period.
In a frantic last 10 minutes, two players were sent off. Darren Dods was
dismissed for pushing Keith Wright after 81 minutes and Raith's McEwan was shown
the red card for a second bookable offence shortly after.
