HIBERNIAN REPORTS 2002-2003

Dundee v Hibernian (abandoned) Click here for full match stats

Dundee and Hibernian's televised SPL fixture fell foul of the weather when a heavy flurry of snow descended on Dens Park, making it impossible to continue.

The home side were leading 1-0 courtesy of a wonderful 13th-minute goal from Fabian Caballero after a slick interchange of passing between the Argentinian, Garry Brady and Nacho Novo.

However, referee Alan Freeland was left with no choice but to abandon the match as the game approached the half-hour mark.

A heavy blizzard began to fall, reducing visibility and making it dangerous for the players to run on the slippery surface.

Freeland allowed Dundee boss Jim Duffy the courtesy of allowing a five-minute break in the action and removed the players from the field of play.

However, after watching the groundstaff - assisted by members of Dundee's youth side and Hibs officials - battle in vain against the weather, the referee took the decision to abandon the fixture.

Neither manager disputed the decision, although the snow did stop within minutes of the announcement being made, but Duffy was understandably frustrated after seeing his side take the lead and play some good football.

Duffy said: "It is one of those things, but it is frustrating for us, especially as it stopped within 15 minutes.

"The referee said he couldn't see the lines on the pitch and that the weather forecast was for sporadic falls, so he had a decision to make.

"Years ago we would have just got the brushes out and got on with it, but football has changed and we can't complain. We were playing very well and had scored a great goal, so Bobby will probably be more happy about this than me."

Hibs boss Bobby Williamson admitted he did not even want to travel to Dundee to fulfil this fixture and insisted that the SPL should start looking at postponing matches in advance if weather forecasts are bad.

Williamson did not enjoy the trip up from Edinburgh, during which the team bus encountered the blizzard.

He said: "We have no complaints about calling it off, the conditions were too bad. We only brought a small amount of fans with us today and the weather is probably to blame for that. I wouldn't have driven all the way up here to watch a game of football today if I didn't have to - I just hope the fans get back safely.

"Middlesbrough cancelled their fixture on Friday to save people travelling and wasting their money, maybe we should look at that and take things from it."
