Hibernian's rampant Scottish Cup win handed Franck Sauzee his first victory as
manager in convincing style.
Francisco Luna, David Zitelli, Gary Smith and Eduardo Hurtado all added their
names to the scoresheet to ensure a fourth-round meeting with either Rangers or
Berwick.
Stranraer had been one of the teams who had contributed to Franck Sauzee's
unhappy beginning as Hibernian manager when they held them to a goalless draw at
Stair Park.
But the Second Division side seemed to struggle almost immediately in the much
more intimidating surroundings of Easter Road.
Although Kevin Finlayson managed to test Hibs goalkeeper Nick Colgan as early
as three minutes into the game, it was only two minutes later that Billy
McLaren's men found themselves trailing to the Premier League side.
That goal came courtesy of a superb move that saw Grant Brebner pick out Ulrik
Laursen on the left flank.
The Dane flighted a cross into the box to the awaiting Luna and he gave Hibs
an early lift when he bulleted a header past goalkeeper Mark McGeown.
The opener spurred Sauzee's side into action and they could have doubled their
lead after 12 minutes when Derek Townsley found himself clear on goal only to be
denied by Kevin Gaughan who somehow managed to block the effort.
But Hibs did not have long to wait for their second goal and that came from
the penalty spot after referee Willie Young ruled Zitelli had been felled in the
box by Fraser Wright.
The Frenchman cooly stepped up for the spot kick himself and left the
Stranraer goalkeeper helpless as he slotted home.
Zitelli should have grabbed his second after 33 minutes. Alen Orman went on a
stunning run down the right that took him all of 40 yards before squaring the
ball to the Hibs striker but Zitelli failed to connect properly and the chance
was lost.
That proved to be Zitelli's last contribution to the game. The striker was
apparently playing with a slight shoulder injury and he had to go off after 36
minutes and was replaced by Garry O'Connor.
Hibs should have grabbed their third goal four minutes before the break.
Laursen flighted a cross into the box to Brebner at the far post but he
mis-hit the ball from just a couple of yards out.
Hibs started the second half in rampant form and were threatening just a few
seconds after the re-start.
Laursen chested the ball down to Luna inside the six-yard box but, before he
could pull the trigger, Wright had managed to clear the danger.
But he was less successful a few seconds later. Ulises de la Cruz had replaced
Brebner at half-time and he made an immediate impact when he swung a corner into
the path of Gary Smith who nodded home his first goal for Hibs despite Wright's
best efforts to clear off the line.
Hibs were still searching for more goals despite their comfortable lead and
could have added to their haul just after the hour mark.
Laursen opted to try an opportunist drive from 25 yards and the effort sliced
through the Stranraer defence and fell just inches wide of the upright.
Hibs continued to push forward and Orman played the ball to Luna - his header
fell into the path of de la Cruz and the Ecuadorian unleashed a thunderous shot
that cannoned off Derek Wingate after 68 minutes.
Seconds later Luna was left holding his head in frustration after sending a
cross over from right in front of goal.
Stranraer's chances in this game had been few and far between but they had two
opportunities in quick succession.
Billy MacDonald released substitute Paul Blair after 76 minutes but he sent
the shot well over the crossbar.
A few seconds later Shaw tried to set up Blair but this time the Stranraer
player blasted the ball into the side-netting.
But Hibs were looking the team most likely to score and they sealed the win
with their fourth goal three minutes from time when Hurtado bundled the ball
over the line from a de la Cruz corner.
