HEARTS REPORTS 1997-1998

Hearts 2 Clydebank 0

Hearts were glad to get through this tie after being given a real fright by Clydebank.

Goals from Thomas Flogel and David Weir ensured the Premier League side went through to the fourth round.

But the second division outfit will take a lot of credit from this performance and were only denied a goal by the heroics of Hearts goalkeeper Roddy McKenzie.

Hearts took the lead in 31 minutes when Flogel fired the ball into the roof of the net following a goalmouth scramble.

And the Tynecastle men's progress was ensured when Weir rose high in the 61st minute to meet a Steve Fulton free-kick and head home.

However Clydebank had ten great chances to score and only bad luck and good goalkeeping denied them.

After just four minutes David Nicholls beat McKenzie with a long range shot which incredibly hit the inside of the post and instead of crossing the line came back out and was cleared.

Then Nicholls tested McKenzie with another great shot but not for the last time the Hearts keeper produced a fine save.

Colin McDonald and Joe McLaughlin went close with headers and the Hearts fans breathed a sigh of relief when Flogel's opener went in.

However the game could have changed dramatically if referee Michael McCurry had awarded the underdogs a penalty on the stroke of half-time when a Nicholls goal-bound shot struck the arm of Weir.

Hearts second goal killed off any real chance Clydebank had of causing an upset but they refused to give up and McKenzie produced two outstanding saves to deny McDonald and Nicholls.
