MICK OPTIMISTIC OVER GRETNA SURVIVAL

Gretna caretaker manager Mick Wadsworth revealed there was still hope of survival after the club's last Clydesdale bank Premier League game ended in a dramatic win.

Gavin Skelton, by far the club's longest-serving player, fired Gretna to a 1-0 win over Hearts with the last kick of the ball at Fir Park.

Gretna are now praying for last-minute intervention off the park with a buyer needed by the weekend to prevent the administrators from winding up the relegated club.

Wadsworth has, however, been given some indication that a potential takeover could still happen.

"I've heard a whisper, there is a package that has come together in the last couple of days. (It looks) better than things have looked in the last couple of weeks," he said.

"But I don't know the details. I am as much in the dark as you. We have had no information when the wages stop or what to do with redundancies.

"What is sure is that most of us will be out of work in the next couple of weeks. If the club survives, it will be a fresh start."

Wadsworth was delighted for Skelton, who has been with the club throughout their rise from the Unibond League to the SPL.

"It was a fairytale finish - good things happen to good people," the former Carlisle manager said.

"If anything was going to happen tonight and we were going to go out with a bang, then that guy deserves it, Gavin Skelton.

"Seven years he has served this club from the Unibond League on.

"It's funny, I remember him signing for me at Carlisle when he was a 14-year-old. I'm so pleased for him because he's a great guy.

"With this great uncertainty now for the next few days, it's a bit of joy."

Hearts caretaker boss Stephen Frail felt the last-gasp defeat had summed up their woeful season after it consigned them to an eighth-place finish.

Teenage striker Gary Glen was sent-off for kicking out at Craig Barr in the 26th minute as Hearts started poorly.

They could have won the game in the final quarter though, but for a string of saves from substitute goalkeeper Artur Krysiak.

However, Skelton fired into the top corner from 16 yards after almost four minutes of injury-time.

Frail said: "Disappointing doesn't even come close.

"If you were a betting man you could have bet on that, the way our season went from day one and that Monday night game against Hibs.

"The script was written. It has to be 100 per cent better, that just isn't good enough.

"It's a sorry end to a sorry season."
