DUNDEE UNITED REPORTS 1998-1999

Clydebank 2 Dundee United 2

Brave, battling Bankies deservedly earned a replay against their Premier League opponents thanks to an enterprising and spirited 90 minutes.

Inspired individual performances from man-of-the-match Joe McLaughlin, Colin Scott, Kenny Brannigan and Dave Nicholls earned them a replay at Tannadice on Saturday.

Clydebank had taken the lead for the second time in the 68th minute courtesy of a super Lee Gardner drive and looked capable of holding out for victory.

But United got a late smile from Dame Fortune in the 79th minute to earn the replay. Joe Miller's corner was nodded goalwards by Darren Patterson, and although Clydebank defender Fraser Wishart appeared to have cleared off the line, the stand-side assistant referee signalled a goal.

This was the clubs' fifth attempt to play the tie because of bad weather, and the match kicked off at Forthbank Stadium, Stirling, with the ultimate winners destined to meet Ayr United at Somerset in the quarter-finals.

There was early evidence of a contrast in styles with Dundee favouring all-out attack and the Bankies content to soak up the pressure and hit on the break, something they did with a vengeance in the 13th minute.

Nicholls took Scott Miller's pass in his stride to leave United goalkeeper Sieb Dijkstra spectating with an unstoppable volley.

The Taysiders then moved up the gears but despite the Herculean efforts of Billy Dodds, Joe Miller and Kjell Olofsson, they could not pierce the powerful home defence.

Around the half-hour mark, Nicholls came close to making it 2-0 with another fierce volley.

Both 'keepers were then called into action when Dijkstra dived to stop Scott Miller's drive, while at the other end, a brave dive from Scott blocked a close-range Olofsson effort.

Despite a series of eight corners, United continued flattering to deceive.

On the resumption, the visitors equalised in the 51st minute. Substitute Alex Mathie slipped a lovely ball to the feet of Olofsson, who rifled home a beauty.

Three minutes later, United almost took the lead, but a magnificent tip over the bar from Scott kept out a Miller cross-cum-shot.

Then came the second for Bankies with that late equaliser for Dundee United. Bookings were given to McLaughlin of Clydebank and United's Dodds.
