Super Caley went ballistic again as Inverness Caledonian Thistle
knocked Celtic out of the Scottish Cup for the second time in four seasons.
Dennis Wyness scored the only goal of the quarter-final at the Caledonian
Stadium as the Division One club booked their place in the last four with a
famous victory over Martin O'Neill's men.
Only four days ago Celtic had humbled Liverpool in the UEFA Cup at Anfield.
It was an altogether different scene on Sunday night as the Scottish champions
were left stunned in the last minute of the first half when Grant Munro picked
out Richard Hart with a fine pass and his cross was knocked home by Wyness from
six yards.
It means Caley, who famously also triumphed at Parkhead 3-1 in February 2000
to prompt the end of John Barnes' spell as Celtic manager, will played Falkirk
or Dundee in the semi-final.
Motherwell will play Dunfermline or Rangers in the other tie after the SPL
leaders were held 1-1 earlier in the day.
Not even the fact that O'Neill had made eight changes to his side suggested
another historic night was on the cards as Henrik Larsson and Jackie McNamara -
who were both at Parkhead in 2000 - and Neil Lennon and Joos Valgaeren were in
the starting XI.
But the Glasgow giants were left stunned after failing to heed the early
warnings from John Robertson's First Division giantkillers.
Javier Sanchez Broto needed to race off his line to save at the feet of Paul
Ritchie in the second minute before Hart lashed his right-footed shot over from
25 yards.
And the Celtic defence were given a real scare in the seventh minute when Hart
drove Barry Robson's corner towards goal and Ritchie directed the ball just past
the post.
The visitors looked short of any ideas and Shaun Maloney's curling free-kick
sailed straight into the hands of keeper Mark Brown.
Inverness continued to attack Celtic's new-look defence - which included
debutant Stanislav Varga - but Ross Tokely's glancing header bounced well wide
from Hart's cross.
Celtic retaliated with Ulrik Laursen getting on the end of Steve Guppy's
free-kick at the far post, but Tokely deflected his header over before Neil
Lennon slashed a shot well over.
Stuart Golabek almost embarrassed himself in the 16th minute when he sliced
Jamie Smith's centre just over his own crossbar from six yards.
Robson looked a livewire for Inverness, but he was cut down by a crude
McNamara challenge which prompted referee Alan Freeland to show the yellow card
to the Celtic player.
Brown showed no sign of nerves in the home goal and he calmly came to collect
crosses from Smith and Guppy with Celtic strikers waiting to pounce.
But he would have had no chance had Larsson's point-blank flick-on from
Maloney's cross been on target instead of flying just over the crossbar.
Brown again needed to be alert on the half-hour mark when he turned Maloney's
dipping free-kick from the edge of the box over his bar.
Thistle gave Celtic another warning in the 34th minute when Hart sent a
left-footed shot, taken on the run, just past Broto's upright.
And the Scottish champions were suddenly trailing in the last minute of the
half when Inverness took a shock lead through Wyness.
O'Neill would not have stood for that half-time score and his side came out
with a renewed vigour after what was sure to be a dressing-room grilling.
Maloney wasted a free-kick by sending it over the crossbar with his team-mates
waiting in the area before Hart hit a weak shot which Broto comfortably saved.
Brown again produced a great save in the 53rd minute to deny Larsson the
equaliser when David Fernandez played him clean through on goal, but the keeper
superbly touched his effort behind from nine yards.
Inverness found themselves increasingly under siege and Munro was booked for
bringing down Smith in full flow in the 58th minute.
Brown then got a hand to Fernandez's shot, from a tight angle, after good work
from McNamara, but none of his team-mates was following up.
O'Neill was beginning to look frantic on the touchline and he brought Anfield
hero John Hartson on for Maloney moments later in his first act of desperation.
Fernandez could have pulled the scores level in the 66th minute, but he had a
rush of blood to the head and blazed his effort well off-target.
The Spaniard almost played Hartson in at the back post, but the Welshman could
only head weakly wide.
The visitors continued to pile on the pressure and Fernandez's next shot was
deflected just past the upright.
Suddenly Inverness started to believe that lightning could strike twice as
they somehow survived again in the 71st minute.
Tokely cleared Larsson's effort off the line and with the goal at his mercy
Fernandez headed over the bar from just six yards.
They had more heroics from Brown to thank in the 78th minute when he somehow
pushed Hartson's near-post header wide from Smith's dangerous cross.
Hartson almost found Larsson with a clever reverse pass into his path, but the
Thistle keeper again sprinted off his line to save at his feet.
Smith fired erratically over before Roy McBain and Lennon were shown yellow
cards.
Valgaeren was pushed forward and he headed Guppy's cross over with three
minutes remaining before Varga fired over from 25 yards.
The Slovakian won a foul for Celtic just outside the box in injury-time, but
Larsson sent his effort whistling just over the bar and Valgaeren sent his
last-gasp effort wide.
O'Neill embraced Robertson at the final whistle - but there was no doubt his
pride had been hurt as Super Caley left Celtic feeling atrocious once more.
