Dundee claimed their first victory over Aberdeen for 24 years when they
emerged victorious by the odd goal in three in a poor match at Pittodrie.
Following a dismal display against St Johnstone last week the Dons fans must
have thought things could not have got any worse - but how wrong they were.
The only difference this week was that the Reds failed to sneak a win like
they had against the Perth side.
But this turned out to be no surprise as visitors Dundee, having last week
secured their Scottish Premier League status with a 2-0 win over City rivals
Dundee United, deserve the win.
Aberdeen did most of the attacking in the early stages but rarely troubled
Dundee keeper Robert Douglas with the majority of shots going wide of the mark
and the ones which were on target were easily stopped by Douglas.
The visitors then brought the dour first half to life four minutes before the
break when Steven Boyack latched on to a great through ball by Iain Anderson
before skipping past Andy Dow and unleashing an unstoppable shot past Tony
Warner, the on-loan keeper from Liverpool.
Jim Hamilton almost equalised on the stroke of half-time when he got on the
end of an Eoin Jess corner only to see Barry Smith clear his header off the
line.
Dundee started the second half on the attack and would have gone two up had it
not been for a brilliant goal line stop by Warner from Eddie Annand's flick.
Visiting keeper Douglas then kept out Aberdeen with three stops in an
eight-minute spell the best coming when he turned a powerful left-foot shot by
Jess round the post then denying the same player when Jess tried his luck from
the other side of the box.
But with four minutes remaining the Dark Blues secured victory when Anderson
collected a Hugh Robertson free-kick before firing home a low right-foot shot
which went in off the post.
But The Dons pulled a goal back in injury time when Robbie Winters latched on
to a Paul Bernard cross before sending a strong right-footer past Douglas from
six yards.
The result now means that once again the future position of Dons boss Paul
Hegarty hangs in the balance while the Dens Park men can celebrate a very rare
win against the men from the granite city.
