ABERDEEN REPORTS 1998-1999

Dunfermline 1 Aberdeen 2

Aberdeen's revival under caretaker manager Paul Hegarty continued with three points against Dunfermline who have now won only twice in their last 20 League games.

They seem to be taking root at the bottom of the Premier League and the prospect of relegation is now a growing probability.

The game was played in deplorable weather - gale-driven sleet - which by half-time had covered the pitch with a thin layer of wet ice.

The result was for the first 45 minutes there was very little for the 7,800 fans to enthuse over.

In the 35th minute Eoin Jess provided one of the few thrills by narrowly missing the Dunfermline goal with an angled shot that Butler couldn't touch at full stretch.

When the sleet stopped things changed. A minute after half-time Dunfermline's George Shaw missed a golden opportunity to put the home team ahead when a Stewart Petrie pass found him near goal with keeper Derek Stillie out of position. His header however was wide of the post.

Then the game really did waken up in the 52nd minute when Aberdeen took the lead.

Derek Whyte missed a Robbie Winter's cross but John Inglis dashed in to slam the ball home from close range.

However a minute later Dunfermline equalised through George Shaw, who shot from 20 yards, the ball taking a deflection off a defender and over the head of Stillie into the net.

In the 71st minute Winters had a golden opportunity to put Aberdeen further ahead but his blockbuster of a shot from 17 yards was brilliantly palmed away by keeper Lee Butler. The ball though started to spin towards the net and unfortunately for Butler it bounced off the near upright for a corner.

Aberdeen were now gaining in confidence and in the 75th minute they again took the lead with a breathtaking goal.

A defensive blunder by Jamie Squires allowed Winters to speed down the left and send a perfectly timed pass to Jess who drew keeper Butler and booted the ball into an empty net.
