Robbie Winters' double earned Aberdeen their second victory of the week under
caretaker manager Paul Hegarty - and kept up their Dens Park record of only two
Premier League defeats.
Winters, the £1million signing from Dundee United, kept up his excellent
record against Dundee by snatching an equaliser on the stroke of half-time and
netting the winner with seven minutes left.
Dundee boss Jocky Scott will want to know how his side, who had dominated the
first 35 minutes, almost disappeared after the break.
New signing Steven Tweed can be exempt from the criticism and had a fine debut
after his move from Stoke City although the whole Dundee defence were troubled
by Winters' pace.
In only the second minute Aberdeen got a fright when ex-Scotland goalkeeper
Jim Leighton sprinted from his area and totally missed his kick but central
defender John Inglis was on the spot to mop up the danger.
Five minutes later a through-ball by Ilian Kiriakov was headed out by Tweed
and ex-Bradford midfielder Nigel Pepper volleyed a 25-yarder just past the
post.
Dundee then had the first of their chances when the impressive Shaun
McSkimming played the ball in for Willie Falconer. He took control and shot
across goal but Dariusz Adamczuk just failed to get a touch at the far post.
The home side were in total command now and a long throw by Adamczuk gave
Eddie Annand the chance to shoot from the edge of the box but his effort was
deflected for a corner.
McSkimming took the resultant kick and although the ball was headed back out
to him the ex-Motherwell man swung the ball to the far post where the unmarked
Gavin Rae headed into the net from close range.
Adamczuk was then yellow-carded for a late challenge on Eoin Jess before the
Aberdeen midfielder took a through-ball from Winters and fired an angled effort
just past the far post in a rare Aberdeen attack.
A clash with Tweed then earned Winters a booking before the ex-Hibs defender
ventured upfield to fire a fierce 30-yarder just over the bar.
Five minutes from the interval Dundee got a warning of what was to come when a
superb four-man move ended with them claiming a penalty which was turned down
when Winters shot came off home skipper Barry Smith.
And on half-time, Aberdeen equalised when ex-Dundee United defender Mark Perry
sent in a low cross which was deflected to Winters and he steered the ball into
the corner of the net from 16 yards.
A disappointing second half which was almost totally dominated by the Dons
sprang to life with 12 minutes remaining when Winters and Jess split the home
defence for Jess to bring out a superb save from home keeper Bob Douglas with an
angled effort.
And in the 83rd minute a long Kiriakov through-ball allowed Winters to use his
speed and take the ball into the area before shooting under Douglas for the
winner.
