Sorry Aberdeen's miserable season continued as St Johnstone did enough to hang
on to fourth spot in the table with a narrow win at Pittodrie.
The Dons, who have faded terribly after a relatively bright start, were sunk
by a Miguel Simao goal to leave them languishing joint bottom of the Scottish
Premier League.
With want-away midfielder Craig Hignett suspended for the match, Dons manager
Alex Miller gave Baldur Bett his first start of the season.
Bett, just 18 and the son of former Aberdeen star Jim, failed to impress
though and was replaced midway through the second half.
Aberdeen opened lively enough though with Eoin Jess and Illian Kiriakov both
having shots saved by Saints keeper Alan Main in the opening 10 minutes.
Saints fought their way back into the match and Dons' keeper Leighton did well
to stop a grand effort after Kane had shot wide of the target.
With St Johnstone putting more and more pressure on the home side Kane sent a
through-ball that split the Dons defence and Miguel Simao latched on to it
before drilling a low shot past the despairing Leighton.
Although Aberdeen enjoyed much more of the second half possession they found
the visiting defence strong enough to hold off any threat that the forwards
posed. St Johnstone to their credit played well enough to deserve their win and,
coming on the back of their victory over Celtic last week, they have now put
their 7-0 McDiarmid Park thrashing by Rangers well and truly out of their minds
as they chase a European place.
