ABERDEEN REPORTS 2001-2002

Hibernian 3 Aberdeen 4

By PA Sport staff

Hibernian boss Franck Sauzee saw his run of bad luck continue when Aberdeen substitute Darren Mackie smashed home the rebound after Nick Colgan had saved Derek Young's 90th-minute penalty to give the Dons victory at the death.

The home side pegged Aberdeen back three times before eventually losing to the killer goal from Mackie in the dying seconds.

Hibs had been extremely unlucky not to gain all three points against Kilmarnock on Saturday where a 90th-minute goal denied them and yet again they were victims of a late goal.

The home side started positively with midfield playmaker Grant Brebner just over-hitting a pass through the centre which nearly put Paco Luna clear in the second minute.

In the sixth minute Ecuadorian striker Eduardo Hurtado won possession from Thomas Solberg and let fly with an ambitious 40-yard effort which flew over.

Brebner made space for himself before shooting just past Peter Kjaer's right post from 25 yards and then Derek Townsley also went close.

Aberdeen went in front in the 17th minute when Robbie Winters sent a great pass across the penalty area from the left and striker Eugene Dadi drilled a low shot into the left corner past the diving Colgan.

Hibs produced a rapid response with a swift move through the centre putting them level within 40 seconds with Luna smashing a volley into the net from 12 yards after Ulises de la Cruz's ball broke off a Dons defender.

Despite the Hibs leveller Aberdeen were seeing much more of the play and former Dons defender Gary Smith had to use all his experience to clear from a Dadi pass which would have put Derek Young clear.

On 25 minutes the Pittodrie side worked a clever free-kick however Colgan was not fooled and claimed comfortably from a Winters ball aimed at Philip McGuire.

Aberdeen went 2-1 up on 27 minutes with a sweeping move down the right side with Derek Young finding Cato Guntvt and his excellent low cross was despatched into the net by Winters.

The Hibs marking at Aberdeen's second goal had been non-existent however within seconds they nearly levelled again with Hurtado chipping over from a Luna pass.

Hibs did draw level for the second time on 37 minutes with de la Cruz taking the Aberdeen defence apart down the right wing before cutting back from the byline for Townsley who fired into the net from close range.

Hibs deserved to go in at the interval in front after some more great play from de la Cruz yielded another two excellent opportunities.

From the first on 44 minutes Luna's 18-yard header brought an excellent fingertip save from the goalkeeper and then the same player headed inches past moments later.

Aberdeen droveront for the third time just three minutes after the restart after Winters had crossed from the left and Norwegian Guntveit drilled into the left corner past Colgan.

Hurtado was put through by countryman de la Cruz on 56 minutes but Danish goalkeeper Kjaer came out to cut his angle and the striker blasted over.

Brebner shot wide as Hibs tried desperately to get level for a third time and boss Sauzee threw on two players J Wiss and Derek Riordan for Hurtado and Townsley.

On 68 minutes Luna scored his second after sending a beautiful looping header into the right corner over a cluster of bodies in the packed box.

Both sides tried doggedly to find a winner with the home side looking more likely to grab all three points.

The impressive de la Cruz sent over two great crosses however Wiss and Riordan headed wide from good positions.

Then in the last minute referee Hugh Dallas pointed to the spot after Iain Murray fouled Darren Young after Dadi had set him up.

From the spot-kick Colgan made an incredible save from Young's penalty however Mackie was first to the ball to fire the rebound into the net.
