Aberdeen manager Mark McGhee hailed his side for what he rated as their best performance since his summer arrival at the club as they drew 1-1 with Hearts at Pittodrie.

The former Motherwell boss saw his side take the lead through Lee Miller's far-post header but they were pegged back by Andrew Driver's second-half strike.

The Dons manager felt his side could have gone on to win but was delighted to see Scotland striker Miller return to the scoresheet after a long absence.

He said: "It was a good exciting game, one I thought we would win and that we deserved to win.

"Although we have been hard to beat I felt we weren't quite so effective going forward but we made so many chances we should have won the game."

Of goalscorer Miller, McGhee continued: "It's good for Lee to have scored. He's a player that scores in seams and hopefully that sets him on a sequence, ahead of an important run of games.

"Being picked for Scotland was a tremendous boost to him. I've tried all along to protect him (for his lack of goals) in that there's a collective responsibility.

"Lee Miller has not been missing chances, it's just that he has not been given chances. Hopefully that's the start of the team being more productive and Lee himself being more productive."

McGhee also confirmed that the Dons have not yet signed former Rangers defender Maurice Ross, adding: "He came for a week to train and we said we would have a look at him. He has done really well and I'll be speaking with him on Monday about staying a bit longer.

"We've a view to signing him until Christmas or the end of the season. I feel he would be a good addition."

McGhee's opposite number Csaba Laszlo felt his own side could have won the game with their performance, particularly in the latter stages.

He said "I like my players to move the ball. We worked hard on that through the week, however I think they are scared to shoot.

"We attacked well in the final 20 minutes and could have won the game late on. David Obua was particularly unlucky to miss a header late on.

"Aberdeen are a good side and were very dangerous from free-kicks and corners. Lee Miller had a good chance from a corner and had that gone in you don't know what could happen, so 1-1 is a good a result."

Laszlo also brought Laryea Kingston back into the fold with a late substitute appearance, and made clear that he alone picks the team at Tynecastle.

The coach said: "Kingston has more to do, but this was a first step. It was a small step for him but he must be careful not to take a step backwards.

"I am in charge and nobody, but nobody, be it the secretary, the director or my coaches, can do anything that is not what is best for the club."

Asked his opinion on a potential Scotland call-up for goalscorer Driver, Laszlo reaffirmed that it was a decision for the player alone.

"Until Driver receives an invitation to play for Scotland, he can make no decision," he said.

"International football would be of benefit to him as a player but I do not want to influence his choice."
