Inverness concluded the season by winning their fifth match in succession courtesy of a second-half Alan Morgan goal against Dunfermline.

The Caley Thistle midfielder latched on to a loose ball in the 53rd minute to score with a long-range drive and ensure the visitors earned maximum points from all of their post-split fixtures.

Dunfermline nearly fashioned an equaliser when Darren Dods came dangerously close to scoring an own goal, but goalkeeper Mark Brown produced an important save and the Pars ended the term with a defeat.

Dunfermline were presented with an early opportunity to test Brown when Ross Tokely fouled Mark Burchill on the edge of the penalty area in the second minute.

Unfortunately for the home side, Noel Hunt could only strike the resulting free-kick off the Inverness wall and Scott Muirhead sent the rebound over the crossbar with a left-footed shot from 20 yards.

Pars keeper Bryn Halliwell then had to make an important intervention to prevent Scott Wilson from scoring an own goal after the defender's attempted clearance from Morgan's corner nearly looped into the net.

Morgan proved to be the visitors' most threatening player in the opening stages and the former Blackburn Rovers trainee nearly saw a deep cross land in the top corner of Halliwell's goal, only for the ball to drift narrowly wide.

In the 27th minute Muirhead's cross gave Greg Shields an opportunity to send a header towards goal after the defender had stayed in attack following a corner kick.

However, the Pars captain could only direct his glancing effort from eight yards over the crossbar, when he really should at least have called Brown into action.

The final opportunity in a tepid first half then fell to Graham Bayne, who with his back to goal, arced a header from the edge of the penalty area just past the far post.

Dunfermline manager Jim Leishman made one switch during the break with Nicky Phinn replacing Wilson and the home side nearly opened the scoring after only 60 seconds, when Burchill's drive from an acute angle drew a good save from Brown.

Inverness responded in the 48th minute with a shot by Rory McAllister which was parried clear by Halliwell, before Tokely had opportunities from two successive corners which the right-back headed off target.

However, it was a Caley Thistle corner which led to the opening goal when Barry Wilson's centre was headed clear by Phinn and the ball landed at the feet of Morgan, 25 yards from goal.

The left midfielder then confidently despatched a low drive through a ruck of players, which beat the unsighted Halliwell and nestled in the bottom right-hand corner of the net.

With 25 minutes remaining the visitors had to thank goalkeeper Brown for maintaining their one-goal lead, when a headed back-pass from Dods looked like clearing the former Rangers player ad landing in the net.

Brown was alert enough to deal with the danger though and strongly pushed the ball over crossbar to spare Dods any embarrassment.

Inverness went on to finish the match on the front foot and Bayne and substitute Liam Fox both wasted opportunities to add a more conclusive look to the scoreline in the closing five minutes.

But due to the duo's profligacy, the away side had to be content with a one-goal winning margin as their campaign ended on a successful note.
