Morton missed the chance to go top of the Third Division as they were held to a
goalless draw at Elgin.
Dave McPherson's side were without top scorer Alex Williams and it showed as
they failed to seriously threaten their struggling hosts, yet to win in the
league in 2003.
Morton's best chance fell to young striker Jim McAllistair a minute before the
break, but after breaking clear of the home defence he lobbed inches over the
crossbar from the edge of the box.
Visiting goalkeeper Craig Coyle made good first-half saves from Dave Ross and
Kevin Steele and got down well to keep out Mike Sanderson's second-half header.
City wasted a glorious chance to steal all the points late on when Ross'
header was touched onto the top of the crossbar by Coyle.
In the day's only other game to survive the weather, Iain Stewart grabbed a second-half hat-trick as Peterhead destroyed basement
side East Stirling 6-0.
The hosts ran riot, with Alex Bone opening the scoring after just five minutes
after a horrendous attempted clearance by goalkeeper Scott Findlay.
Bone netted his second in the 14th minute, taking advantage of some static
defending to fire past the exposed Findlay at the second attempt.
Stewart made the game safe 45 seconds after the break with his first, before
defender Calum MacDonald fired in his first goal for the club.
The punishment for Hugh McCann's side did not finish there, and Stewart struck
again after 68 minutes before completing his hat-trick, and the scoring, with a
clever finish 10 minutes from time.
