Peterhead threw away a great opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the
table by letting a two-goal lead slip away in a 2-2 draw with East Fife.
An evenly-contested first half saw the visitors pass up two good chances to go
in front before Peterhead's Martin Johnston scored a quick-fire double after 37
and 39 minutes.
His first was from close range after keeper Jim Butter did well to save an
Iain Stewart shot, and his second came from Andy Roddie's left-wing cross, which
Johnston rifled high into the net.
East Fife had the better of the second half and Mike Hall pulled a goal back,
heading in from a corner, before top-scorer Kenny Deuchar shot low past Paul
Mathers for a deserved equaliser.
In the only other game on Saturday, striker John Gemmill notched a hat-trick to secure a 3-2 victory for Queens Park
at home to Elgin City.
But the win was made easier by some poor Elgin defending, with goalkeeper
Martin Pirie and Steve MacDonald getting into a tangle on the edge of the
penalty area to gift Gemmill his third goal.
After a bright opening Gemmill knocked in the opener in the 15th minute with a
first-time shot from a James Allan cross, but Craig Tully grabbed a 29th-minute
equaliser in a goalmouth scramble and then headed Elgin into a second-half
lead.
But straight from the kick-off Queens raced down to the other end for Gemmill
to equalise.
And then came that 58th-minute blunder by the Elgin defenders for Gemmill to
grab the winner.
