A last-minute East Fife double saw the leaders beat unlucky Gretna 3-2 after a
stunning second-half recovery.
With gritty Gretna set to record an important win, Paul Mortimer smashed home
an 89th-minute equaliser which was quickly followed by a dramatic Kenny Deuchar
winner.
Following a terrible opening half dogged by misplaced passes and tackles,
Gretna opened the second period in stunning style.
Within minutes Mark Cleeland had beaten the offside trap before putting over
an inch-perfect cross which Mark Dobie was on hand to slot home.
A minute later Dobie turned provider and set up Matt Henney to give the home
side a 2-0 lead. However, the visitors refused to give in and pulled one back
through John Ovenstone in the 57th minute after the home defence failed to
clear.
East Fife continued to pile on the pressure, although the points looked to be
staying at Raydale Park until that late quick-fire double.
Second-placed Albion Rovers continued their promotion push in Bell's Scottish League Division
Three with a 1-0 victory at Montrose.
Albion went close after 26 minutes when a swerving shot from Todd Lumsden was
turned round the post.
Three minutes before half-time, Steve Kerrigan headed just wide for Montrose.
Montrose pushed forward in the second half and went close through Keith Gibson
and Kerrigan.
But Albion won the game 12 minutes from time when Charlie McLean scored with a
close-range header.
Third-placed Morton are goal-hungry under new manager John McCormack and how their fans are
enjoying it, the latest win coming courtesy of a 4-0 victory over Elgin.
Morton took only 18 minutes to open their account when Elgin defender Steve
MacDonald brought down Phil Cannie with little danger threatening, and Alex
Williams converted the penalty kick.
Although Elgin came close with a Ryan McMullan free-kick, Morton stretched
their lead with two goals in two minutes just before the interval.
A sweeping 42nd-minute move ended with Cannie finding Jani Uotinen and the
Finn slipped the ball into the net from near the byline.
Then, as the Elgin defence failed to clear properly, John Maisano volleyed a
third.
Cannie was stretchered off early in the second half with a serious leg injury
and from the resultant free-kick Maisano drove in his second and the team's
fourth.
To add to Elgin's woes they had Kevin Steele sent off two minutes from time.
A single goal was enough to secure three points for Stirling as they stayed in
touch in the promotion race with a 1-0 victory over Queens Park.
Colin McKinnon was the match-winner, driving the ball home from just inside
the area a minute before half-time.
It was a deserved victory for the visitors, although Queens put in a better
second-half display but just could not find a way through.
Their best chance fell to 17-year-old John Gemmill, but goalkeeper Ian Turner
got a fingertip to the ball to concede a corner which in the end was wasted.
The visitors should have doubled their lead midway through the second half,
substitute Ross Beveridge lacking composure and blasting over from 12 yards when
it looked easier to score.
Paul Hay then saw his strong drive go just beyond the post.
Martin Johnston was Peterhead's hero as they ended a five-game winless run with
a 4-1 victory at bottom club East Stirling.
Johnston helped himself to all four goals, but Peterhead did not always have
it as easy as the final scoreline suggests.
Johnston's first goal came after six minutes when he took advantage of a
defensive slip to shoot home.
Shire's Brian Fairbairn levelled 10 minutes later and Peterhead started to
struggle.
But normal service was resumed a minute before the interval when Johnson shot
into the empty net after a goalkeeping blunder.
The striker completed his hat-trick seven minutes after the break, sweeping
home a Kevin Tindal cross from the right.
He had chances to score more goals but had to wait until the final minute
before adding his fourth, another tap-in from a suspiciously offside position
