FIVE-STAR FIFERS MARCH ON

By PA Sport Staff

League leaders East Fife trounced Montrose with a sparkling second half display that earned them a 5-0 away win.

The opening goal came after 54 minutes when Craig Farnan drove the ball home from the edge of the box.

It was 2-0 four minutes later when Grant Cunningham scored with a diving header from a Gordon Love cross.

After 77 minutes, Frank Conway fouled Kenny Deuchar and was sent off and Deuchar made it 3-0 from the penalty spot.

Two minutes later it was 4-0 when James Herkes ran through the middle to score and Graeme Christie was sent off for his dissent reducing Montrose to nine men.

A minute from time Love set up Herkes to notch his second of the game.

A fighting second half performance by Albion Rovers saw them chalk up a 2-1 home win over Gretna.

It was their second home win of the season and saw them maintain their promotion challenge.

In a scrappy first period there were chances at either end but good goalkeeping and poor finishing kept the scoreline blank at the break.

Within three minutes of the restart, Ryan McGuffie fired in a left-foot shot which deceived Scott Shearer in the home goal and crept in.

Within two minutes, Rovers were back on level terms through a Lee Duncan header and the clinching goal came after 63 minutes when Charles McLean fired the ball home from 15 yards.

Peterhead and visitors Elgin fought out a 2-2 draw - and a share of the points was about right in a game of few chances.

Peterhead took an early lead, top scorer Iain Stewart sidefooting an Andy Roddie cross from the left into the net after six minutes.

Elgin drew level with a stunning shot from David Craig in the 31st minute, bulleting a shot from 25-yards high into the net.

Two minutes later City took the lead, Kevin Steele crossing for the diminutive Campbell to head in from six yards out.

Peterhead deservedly equalised after 57 minutes, Martin Johnston putting the finishing touch to a sweeping move that started with a throw out from keeper Paul Methers.

Stirling Albion failed to record their sixth league win in a row after being forced to settle for a 1-1 draw at East Stirling.

The visitors had the bulk of pressure and scoring chances but could not convert, and were further handicapped by the sending off of skipper George Rowe.

Despite being down to 10 men Albion took the lead six minutes after the break.

Striker Steve Mallan was brought down inside the box and Steven Nicholas struck home the resulting spot-kick.

Shire's numerical advantage finally told in the 73rd minute.

Sean McAuley's right-wing corner was twice fired towards the Albion goal and pushed out again only for substitute Derek Ure to fire home from point-blank range.

Queens Park needed until the 83rd minute to finally grab a deserved equaliser in a draw at home to Morton and get a share of the points in a game which they virtually dominated throughout.

The big thorn to Queens came in the shape of Morton goalkeeper Craig Coyle, who produced no less than seven stunning saves including three inspired efforts in a two-minute spell late on.

Queens pushed forward from the start and Alan Dunning twice went close to breaking the deadlock along with Johnny Whelan and James Allan.

The Spiders continued to dominate in the second half but the visitors took the lead against the run of play in the 70th minute when Dave McGreggor threw himself to connect with a Phil Cannie corner.

Man-of-the-match Coyle was finally beaten seven minutes from time when Steve Canning rifled in a close-range shot.
