RAMPANT ROVERS GIVE FIFE STRIFE

East Fife's promotion hopes took a dent after Albion Rovers demolished them 4-0 at New Bayview.

Rovers took the lead in 21 minutes when Jordan Smith nodded a corner down to Jim Mercer who swept the ball into the net. Jered Stirling scored the second from the penalty spot after Paul Mortimer fouled Charlie McLean.

The match was beyond the Fifers, whose best chance was a John Ovenstone header, when John McCaig headed-in Stirling's corner in 69 minutes. McLean tapped in the fourth five minutes from the end after good work from sub John Bradford.

Gretna took a point from bogey side Queens Park with a 2-2 draw, but the home team had to wait until the last minute for the crucial equaliser.

It was the visitors who opened the scoring after 13 minutes. Queens Park striker James Allan was brought down in the box by Davie Irons. Steven Moffat took the penalty and sent Mathieson the wrong way to put the Spiders one up.

But Gretna started pushing forward and had a number of chances.

They equalised in the 34th minute when a Tommy Turner free kick ended up at the feet of Simon Eeles. He slotted it across the goalmouth and past Stewart.

Queens Park took control at the start of the second half and began to create chances.

They went 2-1 up after 69 minutes when substitute Patrick Gallagher swept a goalmouth fumble into the net after a corner.

But Gretna equalised just before the final whistle from a controversial penalty.

Mark Dobie fired the ball into the back of the net to share the spoils.

In-form Stirling Albion made it five wins in a row with 1-0 victory against promotion rivals Peterhead.

Stirling had the better of the early stages and deservedly took the lead on 11 minutes through David O'Brien. The left-winger curled a stunning 20-yarder past Paul Mathers for his third goal in three games.

Albion should have went two up in 23 minutes when impressive O'Brien put Stevie Nicholas through on goal but the former Motherwell striker's shot missed by inches.

The visitor's best effort of the half was a fierce 28-yard free-kick by on-loan defender Callum MacDonald in 26 minutes which was well held by Ian Turner. The misery continued for Peterhead in the second half.

Referee Mike Ritchie sent off on-loan midfielder Douglas Cameron for a second bookable offence within seconds of the re-start.

In 70 minutes Peterhead spurned their best chance to draw level when Kevin Tindal blazed over the bar with the net gaping after great work from substitute Lamine Camara.

In the clash between Division Three's draw specialists, Elgin City and Montrose, both teams squandered opportunities as inevitably the match ended in 0-0 stalemate.

A strong northerly wind dominated proceedings as visitors Montrose held the advantage in the first half and went close on four occasions, each time from long-range shots by midfielder Keith Gibson.

As expected the second half was a different story with the home side pushing on in pursuit of a winning goal. David Craig squandered two good chances in the early minutes of the second half while Michael Teasdale and Ryan McMullan also went close with a back post header.

Elgin almost broke the deadlock 10 minutes from time but Davie Ross's header from a David Craig corner struck the woodwork and both sides had to settle for a point.

An Alex Williams treble helped Morton to a comfortable 4-1 win over bottom-of-the-table East Stirling.

Williams put the home side in front in the eighth minute, with Phil Cannie doubling their advantage six minutes later.

A second-half double from Williams in the 73rd and 78th minutes put the game beyond the hapless visitors, who did manage a consolation goal five minutes from time through Jordan Leishman.
