Gretna moved to the top of the Third Division following a 2-0 win against
Albion.
The home side missed a host of opportunities in the first 45 minutes as Rovers
looked toothless in attack.
Gretna made the breakthrough midway through the second half as a mix-up in the
Albion defence left Ryan McGuffie with just the goalkeeper to beat and he
powered the ball into the top-left corner.
They continued to push forward and sealed victory in the 82nd minute when John
Hore slotted home.
Stirling Albion remain unbeaten at home against local rivals East Stirling since
1985 after coasting to a 3-0 win, their first victory of the season.
Stirling had the better of the first half but failed to make the most of their
chances. The deadlock was broken after 54 minutes when Stevie Mallen scored from
the penalty spot after Steve Nicholas had been tripped by Roddy Maughan.
Defender George Rowe headed his first goal for the club from close range after
68 minutes and Mallen added a third 60 seconds later with a terrific shot from
the edge of the area, while substitute Gareth Munro hit the post for the home
side late on.
Trialist Lee Duncan did his chances of earning a deal at Morton little harm with
the opening goal in a 3-0 win against Queens Park.
Duncan broke the deadlock in the 10th minute, and an Alex Williams double in
the 23rd and 34th minutes sealed the points for the Greenock side.
Queens had promised much in the opening minutes and it took two magnificent
saves from Morton keeper Craig Coyle to keep out goal-bound efforts from John
Gallagher and John Gemmell.
East Fife striker Kenny Deuchar scored twice as the home side recorded an
impressive 2-0 win against Montrose.
After a goalless first half, Deuchar opened the scoring in the 47th minute
when he converted Gordon Gilbert's low cross.
Montrose almost levelled after 66 minutes when former Fifers favourite Steve
Kerrigan saw a shot come back off the post.
But Deuchar put the match beyond doubt when he took advantage of defensive
frailties and slammed a shot past Garry McGlynn three minutes later.
Elgin swept aside Peterhead in the Highlands derby at Borough Briggs as a 3-0
win earned them their first home victory of the season.
Visiting goalkeeper Paul Mathers denied City dangerman Ryan McMullan three
times in the first half with a series of good saves.
However, on the stroke of half-time, Davie Ross rose to head home a McMullan
corner for the opening goal.
Steve MacDonald also had a goal disallowed for the home side but they were
seldom in danger of losing their advantage and confirmed their superiority with
two late goals.
Michael Sanderson produced a weaving run to net a fine individual effort after
82 minutes before substitute Ricky James clinched it at the death with a
glancing header from a Sanderson cross.
