East Fife improved their lead at the top of Division Three to five points after
a facile 3-0 victory over East Stirling.
Ross Graham gave the Fifers an early lead just before half-time after Craig
McMillan's corner fell invitingly to the striker, who sidefooted home from six
yards.
East Stirling tried to claw their way back but Mark Lukowiecki wasted their
best chance when he shot over the bar just before the hour.
That miss was all the more costly when East Fife made the points safe 12
minutes from time. Euan Donaldson fired home a second, before substitute Craig
Farnan added a third six minutes from time.
Elsewhere Elgin are still seeking their first victory of 2003 but can take heart from a
spirited 2-2 draw at home to Gretna after twice coming from behind.
The Borders side drew first blood after 56 minutes when Mark Dobie headed home
a Keith Knox cross, but City drew level three minutes later thanks to an error
by Gretna goalkeeper David Matheson. He allowed a Kevin Steele drive to slip
through his legs, much to the amusement of the home crowd.
Gretna regained the lead just before the hour-mark and again a goalkeeping
blunder was responsible. Elgin's teenage goalkeeper Peter Hamilton fumbled a
Knox free-kick and Mike Galloway capitalised by tapping home the loose ball from
close range.
But Elgin refused to lie down and grabbed a deserved point after 74 minutes
when a John Gallagher corner found unmarked Dave Ross, who headed the ball home.
Montrose and Queens Park drew 1-1 in a keenly-contested encounter.
Queens Park started brightly and went close to scoring after 16 minutes when
Jamie White's header rebounded off his own crossbar only to be cleared by Barry
Donachie.
However, Montrose took the lead after 34 minutes when Gregor McKechnie's
strike was not gathered by goalkeeper Mark Cairns and somehow trickled over the
line.
Queens battled back bravely though and restored parity on 50 minutes when a
corner was not dealt with by the Montrose defence and Johnny Whelan was on hand
to equalise from close range.
