Inverness devastated St Mirren with a dazzling display of pace, position
passing, and finishing power during a 4-1 victory at Caledonian Stadium.
Dennis Wyness gave an early indication of things to come when he pounced on a
blunder by Richard Robb to give the home side the lead in the seventh minute.
The Jags maintained their pressure and Wyness extended the lead after 25
minutes with a spectacular 20-yard drive after good play by Barry Robson and Roy
McBain had set up the chance.
The Highlanders continued their onslaught in the second half and Saints keeper
Kris Robertson made a superb save when Paul Richie connected with a 50th minute
cross from Robson.
Richie Hart made it 3-0 eight minutes later with a 25-yard rocket after Wyness
had created the opportunity.
Ricky Gillies reduced the arrears when he got his hand to a cross from Chris
Kerr after 82 minutes, but Barry Robson restored the three-goal advantage with a
penalty two minutes later.
Table-topping Falkirk had to fight all the way to hold on to a point in a 1-1
draw with Queen of the South.
The Dumfries side had gone ahead after just 11 minutes when Brian McColligan
headed in a cross from Robbie Nielson to notch his first goal for the club.
Both sides wasted chances before Falkirk levelled five minutes into the second
half when a cross from James McQuilken was headed against the post by Kevin
James and John Henry was on the spot to turn home the equaliser.
Clyde's fine run continued with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Ross County who
will feel that they did enough to earn a draw.
The home side took the lead after six minutes when Paul Kane floated over a
corner from the left and the ball flew across the face of the goal to the back
post where Pat Keogh arrived to nod home.
The lead was doubled after 37 minutes when Keogh and Kane combined to tee up
Jack Ross and his 25-yard effort flew in with the aid of a telling deflection.
This jilted the visitors into life and two minutes later Martin Canning strode
forward to get on the end of a Steven Ferguson pass before driving low into the
goal.
The second half saw action at both ends with Colin Nish hitting the visitors'
post and then missing a chance from close range.
Mark McCulloch was also denied a fine solo goal by home keeper Bryn Halliwell.
St Johnstone held off a strong challenge from Alloa to claim a 3-1 victory and
win three valuable points at Recreation Park.
Promotion-seeking Saints took a 25th minute lead with a diving header from
Chris Hay but Alloa, showing great spirit, equalised a minute later with a
penalty kick from Andy Seaton after Jimmy Fisher had been downed in the box by
Paddy Connolly.
The visitors showed more thrust after the break and added a second goal after
47 minutes when Connolly rose to meet a Ryan McCann cross and beat James Evans
with a strong header.
Alloa showed some spirit but lacked the penetration they displayed earlier and
the visitors added a third goal after 70 minutes when Hay tucked the ball home
at the right post.
Referee Ian Frickleton took no nonsense, booking seven players, Max Christie,
Steven Thomson, Fisher, and Gregg Watson of the home side and St Johnstone boys
Keigan Parker, Mark Reilly, and Ian Maxwell.
