Arbroath stunned Scottish League Division One leaders Falkirk at Gayfield Park
with two late goals in a 2-0 win.
Falkirk had dominated the opening exchanges with Arbroath goalkeeper Craig
Hinchcliffe keeping his side in the match with some excellent saves.
But the scenario was different in the second half as Arbroath started to press
more. Midway through the second half a 0-0 draw looked likely but with 20
minutes left, Falkirk were reduced to 10 men when Kevin James was sent off for
his second bookable offence following a tangle with John Cusick.
That fired up the home team and the opening goal came after 83 minutes. Andy
Cargill's shot was deflected into the path of Cusick, who slammed the ball home
from close range.
Two minutes later, Arbroath sealed the win when Craig Feroz tucked home a
penalty after he had been felled in the area by Steve Tosh.
Battling Clyde took all three points in a poor game at McDiarmid Park, beating
St Johnstone 1-0.
Leigh Hinds scored the only goal from the penalty spot in the 18th minute
after Stuart McCluskey fouled Colin Nish.
St Mirren's youngsters gave hope for the future with a 1-1 draw against Ross
County.
But it was experienced campaigner Junior Mendes who got the goal that mattered
in the 39th minute to earn them a point and increase the chances of caretaker
boss John Coughlin taking over permanently.
But Ross hit back immediately and just three minutes later they drew level
when a Steven Mackay corner from the right was not cleared properly and in the
goalmouth scramble central defender Brian Irvine, up for the set-piece, drove
the ball high into the roof of the net.
Inverness Caledonian Thistle strolled to an easy 2-0 home win over Ayr and could
have scored more goals but for an inspired performance by visiting goalkeeper
Craig Nelson.
The Honest Men made a bright start and James Grady fired the ball inches over
the crossbar from the edge of the penalty area in the first minute.
The home side maintained their pressure and Paul Ritchie put them ahead when
he connected with an inswinging corner from Robson after 19 minutes.
The Highlanders dominated the second half and Wyness made victory secure with
a spectacular volley when Ritchie flicked on a free-kick from Robson in the 76th
minute.
Queen of the South had to pull out all the stops to take full points from
Alloa in a bottom-of-the-table clash that finished 1-0 to the visitors.
Two minutes before the interval Jon O'Neill cracked in the only goal from 15
yards to give Queen of the South their victory, just after Peter Weatherson had
rattled the crossbar.
Alloa tried to get back into the game but Richard Walker and Ian Little both
missed the target in a strong period of pressure in the latter stages of the
game.
