FALKIRK HIT ALLOA FOR SIX

First Division leaders Falkirk cemented their place with an easy 6-1 win at Recreation Park against bottom side Alloa.

The home side made the perfect start after only five minutes, Brown Ferguson heading a corner from Andy Seaton into the net. But Falkirk soon slotted into gear to level in the 11th minute with a close-range header from Craig McPherson.

The equaliser inspired the leaders to grab a second goal in 27 minutes, Jamie McQuilken sending over a cross from the left for Andy Lawrie to drive low past Myles Hogarth.

When Lawrie connected with a McPherson free-kick in the 53rd minute Falkirk were home and dry. Substitute Colin Samuel added further goals in the 70th and 75th minutes with Coyle netting a late sixth.

A cracking match at Broadwood saw Clyde come back from two goals down against St Mirren only to lose 3-2 to a stunning Junior Mendes hat-trick.

Mendes had a blistering five-minute spell midway through the first half to put his side 2-0 up.

He broke the deadlock when he ran onto a Hugh Murray pass to calmly slip the ball under Bryn Halliwell.

Then Mendes left three defenders trailing before firing a shot that was parried to Martin Cameron, who chipped the ball back to Mendes to thump home.

The second half looked like belonging to substitute Pat Keogh, who dragged Clyde back into the game after 53 minutes when he hit the ball home from close range and then hammered the home side level with 11 minutes left.

Clyde looked to have snatched a point until Mendes struck home a fierce right-foot shot in stoppage time.

Two opportunist goals from Dennis Wyness gave Inverness Caley Thistle their first victory of the season, a 2-0 win over Ross County.

The Gags got off to a dream start when Wyness took advantage of slack defending to put them ahead in the seventh minute.

The home side maintained their pressure and Tony Bullock made fine saves in quick succession from Wyness and Roy McBain before Wyness, unmarked at the back post, stretched the lead with a bullet header from a Barry Robson cross in the 33rd minute.

Bullock again came to County's rescue when he beat McBain to a superb throughpass from Richie Hart just before the break.

County raised their game in the second half and a well-timed tackle by Stuart Golabet denied a good scoring chance for Steven McGarry on the hour.

Thistle mounted a late surge and Charlie Christie fired inches wide from the edge of the penalty area five minutes from the end.

Two goals either side of half-time were enough to give Ayr United the points in a 2-1 victory at Queen of the South.

The first goal came a minute before the interval as Paul Sheerin sent over an inswinging corner and Mark Campbell rose above the defence to head the ball into the net.

Nine minutes after the break a shot from Scott Chaplain rebounded off a defender to James Grady, who gave Andy Goram no chance from close range.

Seven minutes from time, Queens were given fresh hope when Steve Bowey netted from close range, but Ayr held out for the win.

A Paul Hartley goal in the 28th minute was enough to give St Johnstone three points in a 1-0 win over Arbroath at Gayfield but they had to battle hard against a well-motivated home side.

The Perth men could have increased their margin of victory but Lichties goalkeeper Craig Hinchcliffe performed heroics.

Tommy Lovenkrands and Hartley had great chances to put the game beyond the part-timers either side of half-time but their shots were saved in style.

Arbroath pressurised the visitors' defence but could not create a goalscoring opportunity despite St Johnstone ending the game with 10 men after Ryan Stevenson had been stretchered from the field following a last-ditch tackle.
