Wigan manager Roberto Martinez admits it could be the turn of the year before his side settle down and begin to make an impact.

Martinez made wholesale changes in the squad when he arrived from Swansea in the summer and believes it will take time for the players to get used to each other.

His side have suffered some spectacular highs and lows already, beating Chelsea at home and Aston Villa away.

On the downside there have been defeats to Burnley and Portsmouth, a 4-0 thumping at Fratton Park coming only last weekend.

Although Martinez has been left frustrated by some of their displays, he believes it is only normal behaviour in a new side.

However, he is looking for an improved display on Sunday when they entertain Fulham at the DW Stadium.

Martinez said: "I always feel six months is what you need to allow the players to settle in.

"They also need to understand what is the best way to approach games at this level.

"We have brought in a lot of players with no experience of this league, so they have to adjust.

"I have to praise them because they are showing the right attitude. What we have to do now is try to eradicate our inconsistency."

Striker Jason Scotland is waiting to break his duck after joining Martinez from Swansea, where he scored 21 goals in the Coca-Cola Championship.

There is more pressure on the 30-year-old to deliver with Marlon King now in prison.

Scotland is relaxed about his situation and feels the goals will come sooner rather than later.

He told the club's website: "Sometimes when you are a striker it is easy to get frustrated when you are not scoring.

"But the important thing is to stay focused and do your normal job. I do not see the point of rushing things and shooting on sight.

"I will keep plugging away. I am happy to play a team game and wait for my chance to come.

"Slowly but surely I am improving because you have got to be at your best at this level where you are up against top defenders every week."
