Shay Given is hoping the galvanising effect arising from Wayne Bridge's well-publicised problems could spur Manchester City on to claim fourth place in the Barclays Premier League.

In the wake of the falling-out between Bridge and former team-mate John Terry, City claimed their best result of the season, a 4-2 win at Stamford Bridge.

"It was a personal thing for Wayne and we were delighted for him," Given was quoted as saying in The People.

"We all backed him up over it. We are a team, a family, and we all stick together.

"It's important to do that and if it benefits us now, then great."

Given feels City, currently fifth, are now well placed to go on and claim a Champions League place.

"We have played fewer games than some of the other sides and this is going to go to the wire," he said.

"There are three or four other teams fighting for fourth and it's probably as tight as the title race.

"We showed what we can do against Chelsea but now we have to back it up.

"Our away form has not been good enough so that win at Stamford Bridge really gave us huge belief and confidence."
