BOLTON WANDERERS REPORTS 1998-1999

Bolton 2 Ipswich 0

Debate raged over Bolton's opener in their 2-0 win over play-off rivals Ipswich at the Reebok Stadium - but only one man will be claiming it.

Top scorer Bob Taylor, with 15 league goals to his credit this season, put Wanderers one up but unlucky Ipswich keeper Richard Wright also had a hand in it.

Taylor's 37th minute opener came from superb work by strike partner Eidur Gudjohnsen. The Icelandic youngster ran 50 yards and ploughed through a three man defence to turn in a tight shot which Wright finger-tipped away.

Taylor pounced at the near post with an acute shot which the keeper helped in over the goal-line.

Both Bolton strikers sparkled throughout, Gudjohnsen winning a stunning ovation when he was substituted for Bo Hansen in the dying minutes.

But there could be no doubt over his goal on 69 minutes when provider turned goal scorer after a superb build-up across the Wanderers midfield.

Claus Jensen, Per Frandsen and Ricardo Gardner set it up, the Jamaican international playing Gudjohnsen onside with an incisive final pass.

And Gudjohnsen didn't disappoint, his beautifully measured shot at the far post scything into the bottom left hand corner.

Three points from third placed Ipswich gives Wanderers vital breathing space in the play-off zone - but for large spells neither side looked likely to score.

Both teams looked cautious at goal ends for much of the first half, Bolton just shading it on chances.

Taylor almost scored a 62nd opener when Gardner's ferocious shot rebounded off the keeper into Taylor's path. His shot was deflected just yards out by full-back Mark Venus.

But eight minutes later Frandsen was on hand to make three rapid reflex goal-line blocks, at the other end, the last two from Ipswich striker James Scowcroft.

Ipswich struggled in front of goal - David Johnson testing keeper Steve Banks twice in the final quarter but ending with little to show for his efforts.
