BOLTON WANDERERS REPORTS 1998-1999

Bolton 1 Crewe 3

Crewe pulled off one of the season's shock results to stun Premiership-chasing Bolton.

It was Wanderer's 2,000th home league game but there was no cause for celebration as Crewe proved that they are not ready to concede to relegation just yet.

Rodney Jack, once of Torquay, led the Crewe charge with a brace as Crewe established a three-goal lead within seconds of the second half.

Below-par Bolton, a shadow of their normal selves, were booed and jeered as a run of 15 games unbeaten came to an abrupt end.

Ironically Wanderers wasted the first chance of the game, full-back Neil Cox being denied by Jason Kerton when he should have scored just 10 yards out after 15 minutes.

Crewe took a shock lead three minutes later when clever skills from Seth Johnson ended with his shot being deflected for an own goal by Andy Todd.

It got worse for Bolton on 33 minutes when Jack scored a stunner, racing 50 yards before shooting beyond Jussi Jaaskelainen from just inside the box.

Within seconds Jack set up Johnson but the midfielder was guilty of woeful finishing as Bolton counted their good fortune.

Bolton made a double substitution at half-time but they were rocked within 47 seconds of the restart when Colin Little's pass put Jack clear again and the tiny striker gobbled up the chance with glee.

Wanderers were thrown a lifeline when a foul by Chris Lightfoot on Dean Holdsworth allowed the record signing to score from the resulting penalty.

Bolton threw everything forward but never really threatened to get back into the picture.

Indeed, they were lucky to survive when Jack looked to have a genuine penalty appeal waved away after being floored by Mike Whitlow.

Crewe played the more assured football and if anything it was they and not Bolton who looked a side on the way up.

On this evidence there is no way Crewe will go down.
