Dean Holdsworth's double strike turned this Roses clash on it's head and
stretched Bolton's impressive unbeaten run to 11 games.
The former Wimbledon hit man made it a miserable day for twin brother and
Blades captain David by dragging the visitors back into a game that should have
been over with by half-time.
United were totally in control at that stage, but a catalogue of missed
chances followed by a dreadful penalty miss - their fifth in a row - meant Steve
Bruce's men continued their slide down the First Division Table.
It all looked so promising when teenage striker Andy Campbell - on loan from
Middlesbrough - scored his first ever League goal in the 33rd minute.
Latching onto a defensive splitting pass from Shaun Derry, the 19-year-old
England youth international outpaced Mark Fish and hammered the ball past Bolton
keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen.
Campbell had earlier missed three much easier chances, but wasn't the only
villain as United continued to press forward in a bid to upset the form book.
Graham Stuart fired a volley agonisingly wide after Vas Borbokis' freekick had
been charged down, and Brazilian striker Marcelo missed a golden chance when he
fired wide from six yards.
The visitors rarely had the opportunity to break out of their own half, but
amazingly equalised three minutes into first half stoppage time.
The cultured left boot of Scot Sellars swung over a third successive corner
and found the head of Fish, whose important flick left Holdsworth with the
easiest of finishes at the back post.
A minute after the break, United had an incredible triple escape. Holdsworth
met a wicked low cross from Per Frandsen on the half volley, but the ball spun
out off the post.
Sellars, following up, somehow saw his effort blocked by Derry and as the ball
again fell to Holdsworth, keeper Alan Kelly made a great diving save.
Play swung from end-to-end in an enthralling second half and in the 54th
minute the home side were awarded a penalty after Paul Warhurst brought Marcelo
down in the box. To the dismay of the home fans fullback Wayne Quinn hit his
spotkick straight at Jaaskelainen.
That seemed to given Wanderers new life and following a concerted spell of
pressure that saw Claus Jensen fire wide and Holdsworth inches away from
finishing off another delicious Frandsen cross, they scored what turned out to
be the winner.
Frandsen broke again from midfield and after a neat interchange with striker
Bob Taylor, fired a low drive that keeper Kelly could only parry. Holdsworth was
first to react and pounced for his seventh goal of the campaign.
Shellshocked United mustered a late rally but could manage little more than a
weak Stuart shot that skimmed wide of the post.
