Bolton's barren home form continued as a defiant performance by Wimbledon
earned a share of the points from a hard fought draw at the Reebok Stadium.
The home side scored in each half through experienced campaigners Robbie
Elliott and Colin Hendry, but the Dons hit back with goals from teenager Patrick
Agyemang and new signing Kevin Cooper.
Bolton, keen to get their promotion chase back on track, started well and
dominated the first half hour.
Wimbledon played a neat passing game but were restricted to a single long
range effort from Michael Hughes which went wide of the mark.
On-loan Andy Campbell, making his first home start went close on 11 minutes
after a 50-yard run took him into the box. And three minutes later he latched on
to a cross from Dean Holdsworth but his shot came back off the bar.
Minutes later the Wimbledon goalkeeper, Kelvin Davis, bravely intercepted a
cross from Nicky Summerbee as Bolton pressed forward.
On 28 minutes the pressure paid off. Elliott was fouled on the edge of the box
and took the free kick himself. His fierce drive curled round the wall and into
the left hand corner.
Bolton's jubilation was short-lived as a Wimbledon free-kick was parried by
debutant goalkeeper Matt Clarke and Agyemang pounced to score.
The congested midfield made for few chances and some strange refereeing
decisions, including seven yellow cards, resulted in a scrappy half hour.
On 64 minutes, Bolton took the lead again. Mark Williams fouled Holdsworth and
was booked. After a long delay Holdsworth's free kick was punched away by Davis.
Elliott's corner to the far post was met by Hendry who volleyed home to collect
his third goal in four days.
The final 20 minutes brought a flurry of action with both goalkeepers earning
their keep. Davis saved well from Elliott, Gareth Farrelly and Liam Richardson.
And Clarke arched backwards to claw away a clever lob from Jason Euell.
With seconds ticking away and Bolton hanging on for their first home win since
January, million pound signing Kevin Cooper latched on to a Neil Ardley free
kick and scored with a deflected shot.
Both sides were evenly matched and Bolton will feel aggrieved but it was a
fair result after a tough battle.
