BOLTON WANDERERS REPORTS 2000-2001

Bolton 2 Huddersfield 2

For the second week in succession high-flying Bolton snatched a late equaliser to earn a share of the points.

Per Frandsen's sweet free-kick in injury-time left plucky Huddersfield desperately disappointed as they so nearly claimed all three points at promotion-chasing Wanderers.

Despite creating a glut of chances, the home side trailed for 93 minutes of the game until Frandsen sent the frustrated crowd home relieved.

Huddersfield had rocked their hosts in the fourth minute when a Paul Warhurst mistake let in Kevin Gallen. He sped into the box but his shot was well saved by Steve Banks.

From the corner, however, Banks turned villain as he punched weakly allowing Martin Smith to volley home from close range.

Bolton went close on several occasions, notably when Bo Hansen headed against the bar but Huddersfield doubled their lead after good work from Smith set up Gallen.

On 29 minutes the ex-QPR striker worked free down the left and rounded Banks to slot home from an acute angle.

Huddersfield's goalkeeper Nico Vaesen kept the visitors ahead with some fine saves. A powerful header from Michael Ricketts was pushed aside, a Nicky Summerbee free-kick fisted away and a fierce drive from Hansen tipped over.

Persistent second-half pressure finally paid off in the 59th minute.

Following a short corner, Summerbee crossed to the far post where skipper Gudni Bergsson was unmarked and he headed home from six yards.

On 65 minutes Huddersfield were awarded a controversial penalty. Banks was adjudged to have fouled Delroy Facey but, with the protests over-ruled, Craig Armstrong stepped to hit a fierce shot which Banks tipped over.

Bolton pressed forward with Ricketts and Summerbee going close, but it was left to Frandsen to lift the gloom.

His precision free-kick from 25 yards curled around the wall and into the far corner with Vaesen well beaten.

It was a fitting end to a hard fought game between two teams who were evenly matched despite their respective league positions at either end of Division One.
