BOLTON WANDERERS REPORTS 1999-2000

Bolton 1 Norwich 0

Dean Holdsworth wiped away memories of his infamous Wembley FA Cup semi-final miss to book Bolton's play-off place.

Holdsworth's 76th minute toe-poke was all it took to give Bolton the three points they needed to go above Huddersfield who lost at Fulham.

The substitute stabbed the ball home after the Norwich defence had failed to clear a Robbie Elliott long throw.

It's the second successive year Bolton have been in the play-offs and once again they will have to meet Ipswich Town.

Bolton had struggled in the first half but came out in the second determined to try and force an opening.

At 0-0 they knew that a Norwich goal could be disastrous and end their play-off hopes.

And there was obvious tension in the Bolton play with passes going astray.

But the home side made the bulk of the chances.

Allan Johnston looked clear in the 47th minute only for Daryl Sutch to make a fine last-ditch tackle.

Then Bolton's Danish midfield star Claus Jensen shot from the edge of the area only to see his effort brilliantly saved by Norwich keeper Andy Marshall.

From the resulting corner Bolton looked to have scored. Bergsson's flicked header was knocked up on to the underside of the bar by defender Chris Llewellyn - the ball then looped across the goal and was desperately hooked clear with Bolton players appealing for a goal. But referee John Kirby ignored their appeals.

Leading scorer Eidur Gudjohnsen had a good shot on the turn in the 70th minute but again Marshall saved well.

Five minutes later substitute Holdsworth, on for Bo Hansen, had a shot saved at the near post as Bolton stepped up the pressure.

But a minute later Marshall could do nothing to deny the Bolton striker.

That goal sparked a party mood at the Reebok with fans celebrating the news of Huddersfield's demise at Fulham.

Bolton players went on a lap of honour at the final whistle but they will now have to set their sights on the first play-off game at home to Ipswich.
